San Blas Charitable Event
January 2010
When we arrived in Mexico, it became very evident that the government is not able to provide many of the basic services that we take for granted in the US. Fortunately, there are those who coordinate efforts to make a difference in the lives of as many Mexicans as they can. In this case, Norm and Jan Goldie in San Blas had coordinated an event that brought medical equipment to the local hospital as well as clothing and toys to the poorest families in the region. Local dignitaries participated and expressed their gratitude. A representative from the US Consulate office was in attendence. Several US doctors had brought clothing and medical supplies down from the US. And several of us 'yachties' were invited to participate. We jumped at the chance for a couple of reasons. First, we wanted to do what we could to assist. And second... it helps in communicating to the local people and the local government that those of us who visit on our boats are willing to give back to the communities that we visit. The motto of the Seven Seas Cruising Association is to 'Leave a Clean Wake', which includes doing our part so other visiting boats are continued to be welcome in these communities. We were honored to participate along with the crews from SV Third Day and SV Smoke-n-Blues.
Donated clothing is sorted and placed on tables.
The hospital staff prepares snacks. Officials from the hospital and the Mayor (in cowboy hat) welcome all the attendees.
Jan Goldie organizes the distibution of clothing as the line forms.
The crowd gathers, a pinata is brought out and a good time is had by all.
Jodee from SV Smoke 'n Blues distributes clothing. The Bowen family from SV Third Day bravely take on the toy table.
A very successful event. A photo-op with the US Consulate representative, hospital representative, town Mayor, and Norm Goldie.
So Cindy.... how do you feel after a hard day at the event? "Wonderful.
.... oh look.... a puppy!!"
