Zihuatenejo- Sailfest
February 2010
This was a special part of our cruise. Most of our destinations were for discovery, sightseeing, and relaxation. Zihuat was a destination with a purpose. We wanted to participate in Sailfest, a benefit event for the Zihuat area schools; as well as enjoy the company of friends aboard for a few weeks. Bob Cambas, a friend from Oregon joined us for Sailfest in Zihuatenejo.
The schools that we were supported were in.... well just take a look at the pictures. It was fun and rewarding to participate in several events. Guests came aboard to take part in a parade to Ixtapa as well as a 'fun' race. Several other events and entertainment abounded during the week. Lots of fun, and recommended for other cruising boats to put Sailfest on their itinerary.
Zihuatenejo is a wonderful town to visit. Anchorage in the bay is easy and safe. Easy landing on the beach and lots to see and do. Excellent chinese food and margaritas that'll make you see double and feel single.
Another beautiful sunrise. Wait... red sky in the morning?
Decided to pull into Barra de Navidad to fuel
Entering beautiful Zihuatenejo Bay, where we'll spend the next week participating in Sailfest
Bob settles in after a flight from Oregon
A wonderful dinner at a restaurant overlooking the anchorage
This is one of the operational schools that Sailfest is helping. The Mexican government has been unable to provide adequate help, so with help from Sailfest, the local community will be able to help build a new school. The teachers here donate their time. The students are very appreciative.
A short hike to one of the schools built with Sailfest support and labor from the parents and local community. A vast improvement. Things like a flush toilet, classrooms with walls and a roof that doesn't leak. The proud students, teachers, and parents pose for a photo. We need to continue to help.
Back to Sailfest entertainment. Lots of singers, dancers, and other entertainers. Never a dull moment in Zihuat.
'Is that legal'? Had to catch Bob's expression as he watched a male dancer on stage dressed only in gold paint and a really small g-string.
We had guests aboard for the sail parade to Ixtapa. Nothing like good company, good weather, and bit of wine and cheese.
Victoria Rose underway in the parade
Friends on SV Naida underway in the parade
Off to the races!! Victoria Rose participates in our very first 'real' race. This was the view most of the time.
On the downwind leg, we unleash the spinaker... time to catch up and redeem ourselves...
SV Sea Bear and Victoria Rose neck 'n neck as we approach the finish line
'Victoria Rose's' crew and the captain of a competing boat meet for an 'orange juice' after the race
Huh?? In Zihuat Bay?? Crap... check the lifejackets and wye valve!! Nope... just passing through from the Panama Canal on the way to Alaska. Whew.
Some of the Zihuatenejo beach scene.
